What do I need to do to make sure my phone works abroad?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Getting set up for roaming with Simp is simple ✅ — just check these steps before you travel:

  1. Make sure your eSIMs are installed:

    • Your UK eSIM already includes free EU roaming.

    • If you’re travelling outside Europe, install your Global Roaming eSIM in the app → Manage (second icon from the right) → Add Global Roaming eSIM.

  2. Enable data roaming on your phone:

    • On iPhone: go to Settings → Mobile Service → Select the respective Simp eSIM → Data Roaming and toggle it on.

    • On Android: go to Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile Network / SIMs → Select the respective Simp eSIM → Roaming and toggle it on.

  3. Ensure the correct SIM is set for mobile data:

    • If you have two active SIMs at once, make sure your relevant Simp eSIM is selected as default for Mobile Data

    • On iPhone: go to Settings→ Mobile Service → Mobile Data and Select the respective Simp eSIM

    • On Android: go to Settings→ Network & Internet → Mobile Network / SIMs → Mobile Data and Select the respective Simp eSIM

  4. Double-check your APN settings:

    • Make sure your APN is set to "gamma" for your UK eSIM (EU roaming) and "globaldata" for the Global Roaming eSIM - follow the instructions here for more detail.

  5. Follow any prompts on arrival:

    • When you land, your phone may take a minute to connect.

    • If you’re using the Global Roaming eSIM, activation can take 1–2 minutes - this is normal.

    • If you install the Global Roaming eSIM in an unsupported country, it will not activate until you connect from within a supported country.

That’s it — your Simp plan will connect automatically when you’re in a supported country. 🌍

🔔 Remember, being prepared lets you start roaming right away with no hassle.
