Make your data last: Enable low data mode when roaming

Travelling with your Simp Global eSIM? Love that for you. Here's one small tweak that'll make a big difference to your experience abroad.

How your global roaming data works

Your Simp Global eSIM comes with two tiers of data:

  • 5G speed data - fast, full-speed data up to your plan's limit. This is the good stuff.

  • Unlimited data - once you've used your 5G allowance, you stay connected at 4G speeds with no hard cap. You won't get cut off, but things will feel slower.

The goal is to make your 5G allowance last as long as possible, so it's there when you actually need it - navigating a new city, loading that restaurant menu, sending photos home. What you don't want is apps quietly burning through it in the background while your phone sits in your pocket. That's where Low Data Mode comes in.

iPhone - Low Data Mode

Since you've got a dual-eSIM setup, you want to switch this on for your Simp Global eSIM line specifically - that way your UK plan stays totally untouched.

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)

  3. Under "SIMs" or "Lines", tap your Simp Global line

  4. Tap Data Mode

  5. Select Low Data Mode βœ“

Done. Your iPhone will now keep background data in check on your roaming line, so your 5G allowance goes towards the stuff you actually care about.

Bonus move: Want to go full data-saving mode? You can also turn it on for Wi-Fi - go to Settings -> Wi-Fi, tap the β“˜ next to your network, and toggle Low Data Mode there too.

Android - Data Saver

Android calls it Data Saver, and it does the same job. Steps vary a little depending on your phone:

Stock Android / Google Pixel:

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Network & internet

  3. Tap Data Saver

  4. Toggle Use Data Saver on

Samsung Galaxy:

  1. Open Settings

  2. Tap Connections

  3. Tap Data usage

  4. Tap Data saver

  5. Toggle it on

Other Android phones: Search "Data Saver" in your Settings - it'll show up.

Heads up: Data Saver will stop some apps from refreshing in the background. If you need something like Maps or WhatsApp to keep working as normal, go into Data Saver settings and add it to your unrestricted apps list.

Why it matters

Background data is sneaky. Apps refresh, sync and update constantly without you knowing - and when you're roaming, that's eating into your 5G allowance for zero reason. Flipping on these settings keeps your fast data where it belongs: powering the moments that actually need it.

And remember - even if you burn through your 5G allowance, you won't lose your connection. You'll just drop to 4G speeds until your next billing cycle. No nasty surprises, ever.
